Playground Part of Broader Enhancement Work to the Waterfront, Fully Funded by Grants

PRINCE RUPERT, MARCH 3rd, 2026 – The community has long asked for enhancements to waterfront spaces, and over 2026 and 2027, the City and partners are beginning to deliver on that vision with all funding coming from grants. As part of that work, we are seeking resident input on play elements to include in a playground that will be installed in the area surrounding Kwinitsa Station.

“This project has been long in the making and is part of the 2030 Redesign Rupert Vision,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “Infrastructure is our primary concern, however the funding for this project is enabling us to continue to provide new ‘nice to have’ amenities for the community while local resources are focused elsewhere.”

Play structures are divided into different categories, and residents are invited to select their favourites in each category through an online survey that will also be distributed through the local School District to parents. The survey will be available until Friday, March 27th, 2026 at engage.princerupert.ca/waterfront, or pick up a paper copy at City Hall.

As part of the broader design of the area, the City also plans to relocate and revitalize Kwinitsa Station in partnership with Tourism Prince Rupert and the Museum of Northern BC. The City has applied for additional funding to complete this work over the coming two years.

Moving the historic Kwinitsa Station to a new location within the waterfront area will create room for an expanded suite of amenities in the existing waterfront park. Planned improvements include new covered seating areas, a welcome plaza, enhanced playground and natural play features, public art installations, and interpretive signage that highlights local history and culture. These additions will significantly enhance activation of the waterfront and strengthen it as a year‑round community destination.

This project is supported by Provincial funding, with the City seeking to making existing funding go further through applying for additional grants and seeking community partners for different aspects of the park as designs and cost estimates are completed. The work is a starting point towards realizing long‑standing priorities identified in the 2030 Vision, the Official Community Plan, and the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Plan. This investment is a major step toward revitalizing the waterfront into a vibrant, active, and accessible public space for residents and visitors.
