PRINCE RUPERT, B.C., AUGUST 22nd, 2025 – The City of Prince Rupert is pleased to announce the completion of renovations to the second-floor washrooms of the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.  The renovation project will bring the Civic Centre’s second-floor facilities up to current provincial accessibility and gender equity standards. The work included the abatement and demolition of the existing washrooms, followed by the installation of modern, fully accessible and inclusive amenities.

“These upgrades are part of the City’s ongoing commitment to ensure public spaces are inclusive, accessible, and reflective of the diverse needs of the community,” said Mayor Herb Pond. “This improvement was a goal of the City’s recently adopted Accessibility Plan, and we’re pleased to be able to deliver on the priorities identified by the community less than a year after it was adopted.”

This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada's Enabling Accessibility Fund.

The new facilities include:

  • Three full-privacy, gender-neutral and wheelchair-accessible toilet stalls
  • One wheelchair-accessible shower room
  • One janitor’s room with a mop sink
  • A common sink area featuring accessible fixtures and a baby change table
  • An accessible water bottle filling station in the corridor outside the washrooms

This project was part of approved capital projects for 2024-2025. Construction began earlier in the Spring with completion and opening of the washrooms in mid-August.
