Final Delivery of Larger Bins Completed Last Week
PRINCE RUPERT, MAY 18th, 2022 - The City of Prince Rupert’s new solid waste pick up program is now fully live, following the delivery of over-sized garbage bins to those residents who have ordered them. In total, approximately $700,000 of the project was funded by Canada Community-Building Fund, which provided a portion of the cost of both the original deliveries of waste and recycling bins, as well as the new oversized bins.
“Curbside recycling has been something that the community has asked for, and thanks to available Canada Community-Building funding, we are happy to be able to deliver this new service to Rupertites,” said Mayor Lee Brain. “The flexibility of this granting program allows municipalities like ours greater ability to invest in key programs across a number of priorities.”
These bins were a crucial component of the new recycling service, as they were necessary for compatibility with the City’s new dual-bay waste vehicle and automated loading arm.
“The Canada Community Building Fund is there to help communities meet residents’ needs and ensure they benefit from sound, efficient infrastructure that creates great places to live, work, and raise a family. I’m pleased that our government’s $700,000 investment is helping Prince Rupert’s recycling service to keep the city clean and green,” said Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.
“Helping Rupertites participate in curbside recycling will reduce landfill waste and contribute to a healthier environment,” said Nathan Cullen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “This program reflects our CleanBC goals, and the Province is pleased to work alongside the federal government to support the community.”
We want to thank the community for their patience as we all adjust to the roll out of the new program, which is helping to reduce the community’s waste footprint, and will continue to do so in the years to come. The program is currently on pace to collect 328 tonnes of recyclables this year, which will be diverted from the City’s newly opened landfill. In addition, total contamination of recyclables thus far has been minimal thanks to the diligence of community members in ensuring that they are properly sorting materials.
The Canada Community-Building Fund is administered in British Columbia by the Union of B.C. Municipalities.
