Auditorium will See Temporary Closure November 24th – 30th to Enable Work
PRINCE RUPERT, B.C.- OCTOBER 21st, 2025 – The City of Prince Rupert will begin work later this fall to replace the aging ceiling material and lighting fixtures in the Civic Centre Auditorium/Gym, improving both safety and eventually energy efficiency in this well-used community space.
The current ceiling is covered with original noise-dampening fabric dating back to the facility’s construction in 1971. Over the past several decades, the fabric has deteriorated significantly. In addition, the fluorescent light fixtures in the space are also original and have reached the end of their lifespan.
“The Civic Centre Auditorium is an important gathering place for our community — hosting everything from fitness classes to weddings and memorials,” said Nicole Beauregard, Director of Recreation and Community Services. “This upgrade will make the space safer, more welcoming, and more efficient to operate for years to come.”
Phase 1 of the project, taking place November 24 – 30, 2025, will focus on safely removing the old ceiling materials and completing a BC Hydro energy audit of the lighting in the room, which is fully grant-funded. The audit will provide the City with an opportunity to replace the aging fluorescent fixtures with modern, high-efficiency LED lighting,
The work will be carried out by J&J Construction, with the auditorium closed during the project period. Other areas of the Civic Centre will remain open and unaffected by the construction.
Residents and community groups who regularly use the auditorium are encouraged to plan ahead and adjust schedules during the closure. Once completed, the improvements will ensure that this vital community space remains safe, functional, and welcoming for a wide range of recreational programs and events.
