Residential Structure Fire Resulting in Fatality

See below for a release from the Prince Rupert Fire Department on Last Night's Residential Fire:

PRINCE RUPERT, BC - At 02:55 hrs on December 23, 2022 Prince Rupert Fire Rescue was dispatched to the 600 block of 7th Avenue East to manage a residential structure fire. Upon arrival of the first fire engine, responding firefighters found heavy fire coming from 50 percent of the second floor. Fire crews simultaneously attacked the flames while performing a search of the home.

One occupant had evacuated, however firefighters were unable to immediately extricate a second occupant who was trapped inside the home. Once firefighters were able to remove the second occupant, they were pronounced deceased on scene by attending BC Emergency Health Services personnel. Next of kin has now been notified, and Prince Rupert Fire Rescue would like to express sincere condolences to the affected family.

Damage estimates are unavailable at the time of this release. The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental in nature.

Prince Rupert Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone during the holiday season that working smoke alarms save lives. Make sure that your smoke alarms are tested monthly and are less than 10 years old.

 

Additional Background:

The emergency response brought ten firefighters staffing one engine, one ladder and one command unit to scene. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and the fire was deemed out within 40 minutes of first arrival. One firefighter was sent to hospital with minor injuries.
