Recreation Facilities See Youth Lounge Developed, Major Technical Improvements During Summer Closure

Wed, September 11, 2019

The City’s Recreation Department is unveiling a new Youth Lounge on the main floor of the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre as a place for teens to come after school for programming or just to hang out. The soft opening will happen tonight at the Community Registration Evening that will showcase local recreational, cultural and community groups available in Prince Rupert from 5 pm – 7 pm in the auditorium.

Currently the Raven Youth Lounge is outfitted with a TV, couch, tables and chairs, as well as a pool table, and there are plans for a media console, community bulletin board, and additional game tables in the future.

Municipal Recreation Facilities have also seen some significant, though most publically invisible, upgrades over the past few months. Improvements include the replacement of the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre gas chlorination system with a modernized chlorine tablet system, and upgrades to the ammonia ventilation system that have been in the works since 2018. In addition, the City is currently undertaking upgrades to the exterior building envelope.

“We’re happy to be able to offer this new space to teens in Prince Rupert,” said David Geronazzo, the City’s Director of Recreation and Community Services. “This year I’m also happy to be able to say that we reduced the overall length of the closure by 9 days compared to our original plans.”

The City would like to thank recreation users for their patience during construction and the closures, and hope you enjoy the improvements.
