Council Corner Update - May 28th, 2018

Update from Council Meeting — May 28th, 2018

  • During the Committee of the Whole, Council heard a presentation from the Prince Rupert Outrigger Society, a club that is open to the public and provides opportunities for all community members to access the water safely and regularly.  Council directed staff to look for opportunities to support the society through continued access to the breakwater, and in the longer term to develop a policy for access to the new kayak launch and breakwater by non-profit societies.
  • Council voted to move ahead with a proposal from the Director of Recreation to run a pilot project to provide advertising in the Arena to the Rupert Rampage Men’s Hockey Team for fundraising purposes. This  pilot project will be evaluated after a year term.
  •  Council voted to reinstate the name of “Doug Kerr Field” to the newly refurbished little league field adjacent to the Recreation Complex. The Doug Kerr name had been moved to Roosevelt field while the area was used as an unofficial dog park in previous years.
  • The Mayor presented an update on a meeting he attended last week in Vancouver with other communities impacted by the Port Property Tax Act. These communities agreed to work together moving forward to find a solution to the shared challenges posed by the cap on the municipal rate applied to port industries.
